Malgor & Co., Inc. was officially founded on July 1, 1926 in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico in what we now know as Old San Juan. The founders of the firm, all with equal participation, were: Antonio Malgor Méndez, Antonio Méndez Malgor and Salvador Font Crespo. Both Antonio Malgor Méndez and Antonio Méndez Malgor were family and immigrants from Asturias, a province in northern Spain.
Among the main products that Malgor began working on at the time of its foundation were: rice, bacon, butter, flour, garlic, onion, potatoes, sugar and grains. All these sales were worked wholesale only. These products came from both national origin and imported from countries such as the United States, Spain and Canada, among others. The main characteristic of the company is that all merchandise that was purchased had to be marked with the name “Malgor”.
As time passed, the founders saw a much bigger future in the manufacturing field, which is why they began to bottle Spanish olive oil under the “Canario” brand. Later, this would represent the main brand of the company. Manufacturing activities increased in importance as Malgor decided to bottle the olive oil under the “Campana” brand. Later, the partners made the decision to expand their manufacturing lines and began to produce wine, also under the “Canario” brand. José García Malgor joined the company as a partner in 1943; He was also part of the family of Antonio Malgor and Antonio Méndez.
Malgor continued its growth to the point where its facilities hampered its rapid development. In 1949, the company moved to another building located opposite Pier 3, whose previous tenant had been the Bacardi distillery. Soon after, Malgor started the olive and caper packaging operation and created the product known worldwide as “Alcaparrado” (a mixture of olives, capers and red peppers), all under the “Canario” brand. On the other hand, and as a complement to the production and bottling of wines, Malgor began to bottle other alcoholic beverages. More specifically, it began to produce different types of liqueurs such as Anís Canario, Gin Tres Castillos and the well-known Anís Escarchado Tres Castillos, the latter being a liquor especially mentioned in several critical books as one of the outstanding anisets and that, for many years, It was produced in very limited quantities for the exclusive consumption of family members and close friends.
The building, which has an area of 160,000 square feet, has an excellent location near the port of San Juan, which is the main port of Puerto Rico. In addition, the building has easy access to the main roads, which allows good transport to reach the entire island. The Canarian line continues to grow and today has products such as: Creole adobo, peppers, a variety of canned meat and many others. Other well-known brands created over the years are Maizete corn oil and the Gitana seasoning line.
Having an extensive infrastructure allowed them to quickly introduce new products to the company. Malgor also increased its representations with recognized brands that are not owned by the company. The combination of these factors contributed to the rapid growth in sales, making Malgor & Co., Inc. one of the largest distributors on the Island.
Malgor & Co., founded in 1926 is a leader in supplying our own food and miscellaneous lines, and recognized brands with which we have special distribution agreements.
